Best Practice when serving clients with Disabilities:  Disability Etiquette and ADA Basics


Presented by: Lauren Galloway, Illinois ADA Project Manager for Equip for Equality

The presentation aims to provide an overview as to what legal obligations business owners have to those with disabilities under disability rights laws like the Americans with Disabilities Act.  It also will also highlight some best practices in terms of disability language and etiquette to help participants serve their disabled clients more effectively. Lauren will specifically highlight the obligations businesses have with regard to reasonable modification and effective communication.  It will also touch on website accessibility and best practices to ensure your business is accessible and welcoming to those with disabilities. 


Attendees of our November DEI program can expect these key takeaways:

  • How the ADA and other disability rights laws apply to private businesses with particular focus on the obligations businesses have to provide reasonable modifications and ensure effective communication
  • How the ADA may apply to the websites businesses mantain as well as tips and strategies to ensure website accessibility.
  • Gain a better understanding of best practices in terms of language and etiquettewhen interacting with and welcoming clients with disabilities.
Lauren Galloway is a staff attorney at Equip for Equality where she works on a wide range of disability discrimination cases.  As a disabled woman herself, Lauren loves that she gets to empower other disabled folks to know and exercise their rights.  Lauren also manages the Illinois ADA Project at Equip for Equality, through which she helps members of the public, government entities, businesses owners, and other interested stakeholders understand their rights and obligations under disability rights laws like the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) through trainings like this one.
